Frequently asked questions

Practical answers about images, text, grids, colors, fabric size, and printable exports.

Can I make a cross stitch pattern from a photo?

Yes. Choose an image you have permission to use, select a grid width, color limit, and fabric count, then review the generated grid and legend. A simple subject against a quiet background usually converts more clearly than a crowded scene.

Can I make a pattern from text?

Yes. Enter a name, date, initials, word, or short phrase of up to 24 characters. Shorter text is usually clearer on a small grid. The dedicated text pattern guide explains useful starting sizes.

Why does my pattern have fewer colors than my image?

The color limit simplifies the image into a manageable palette. Fewer colors can reduce isolated stitches and make the legend easier to follow. Increase the limit only when an important feature disappears.

Are the colors exact thread matches?

No. The palette is an approximate screen-color reduction and is not presented as an exact match to a commercial thread catalog. Compare the chart with physical materials before buying thread or beginning a project.

What does “Leave near-white cells unstitched” do?

It treats very light pixels as blank fabric cells instead of assigning them a color and symbol. This is helpful for lettering and subjects on a light background. Turn it off for full-coverage designs where pale areas should be stitched.

How is the stitch count estimated?

The estimate counts cells that receive a color and symbol. When light cells are left unstitched, they are not included. It does not estimate partial stitches, backstitch, mistakes, or thread waste.

How is finished size calculated?

The tool divides chart dimensions in stitches by the selected fabric count. For example, 42 stitches span about 3 inches on 14-count fabric. Add extra fabric around the chart for a hoop, frame, seam, or other finishing method.

What is included in the PNG?

The PNG includes the pattern grid, summary, symbol-and-color legend, and estimated counts. The print option creates a dedicated pattern sheet that can be saved as a PDF through your browser.

Does Thread & Grid upload my image?

This version is designed to read the selected image and generate the pattern in your browser. It does not include an account or cloud project storage. Review the privacy page for the current data-processing description.

Can I use any image?

Use only images and text you have permission to use. Converting material into a pattern does not remove copyright, trademark, privacy, publicity, or other rights in the source.

Can I sell a generated pattern?

The tool does not grant rights in your source material or guarantee commercial-use permission. Whether you may sell or distribute a result depends on the source, your rights, and applicable rules. Obtain appropriate advice when the answer matters.

Why is my image still difficult to recognize?

Crop closer to the main subject, reduce background detail, try a slightly wider grid, or lower the color count to strengthen large shapes. See the step-by-step guide for a troubleshooting table.
