Cross stitch text generator

Turn a name or short phrase into a printable cross stitch text pattern.

Type up to 24 characters, choose the grid width, palette limit, and fabric count, then download a chart with symbols, stitch counts, and a finished-size estimate.

Create a text pattern

What makes text easy to stitch?

A short message with strong letter shapes converts more cleanly than a long sentence. Names, initials, dates, and one- or two-word labels usually remain readable on a small grid. The generator renders the text first, converts it to grid cells, and leaves near-white background cells unstitched by default.

How to make a cross stitch letter pattern

  1. Keep the wording short. Start with a name, date, initials, or compact phrase. The tool accepts up to 24 characters, but fewer characters create larger, clearer letters.
  2. Choose a practical grid width. A wider grid preserves more detail but adds stitches. Begin near 36 cells and increase only when the letter edges look crowded.
  3. Use a small palette. Text usually needs only a foreground color and unstitched fabric. Extra colors can soften anti-aliased edges, but too many similar shades make a simple word harder to follow.
  4. Select your fabric count. The preview reports the approximate finished width and height for 11-, 14-, 16-, or 18-count fabric.
  5. Review before exporting. Confirm that letters are separated and recognizable, then download the complete PNG or print the chart as a PDF.

Choosing a useful size

TextGood starting gridWhy
Initials24–36 cells wideLarge, simple shapes remain readable.
Name or date36–48 cells wideBalances letter detail with a small project.
Short phrase48–72 cells wideProvides more horizontal room for spacing.

These are starting points, not fixed rules. The displayed finished size changes with the chosen fabric count.

What the download contains

The PNG export contains the chart, summary, color-and-symbol legend, and estimated stitch counts. The print option creates a dedicated pattern sheet that can be saved as a PDF from your browser. Colors and counts are estimates; check the chart before buying fabric or thread.
